From the Cunningham Family files of Legacy Keepers Sandra Scott and Janis McCoy

Andrew Cunningham was born in 1836 in Fayette County, Alabama to Jesse Cunningham and Delilah Jones Cunningham. Sarah Jane Black was born March 16, 1837 in Chester County, South Carolina to James Black and Jane Moore Black. Andrew and Jane were married about 1858. Andrew died on November 30, 1863 in Atlanta, Georgia and Jane died March 4, 1918 in Fayette County, Alabama.

Andrew served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War in Company K of the 36th Alabama Infantry. In the fall of 1863, he developed a case of pneumonia and was sent home on sick furlough, but to avoid being captured by Union Calvary, who were raiding close by looking for prisoners, Andrew decided to take his chances on getting back to Atlanta even though he was still deathly ill. He did make it back to Atlanta driving a team of steers with a wagonload of clothing and other supplies but died soon afterward and is buried in Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery in an unmarked gravel.
