Elvin was born 20 September 1918 and died 20 April 1968. He is buried in the Sanders Cemetery near Vernon, Alabama.
At the age of 22, Elvin enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 30 December 1941 at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. His enlistment records show he was 5’8″ tall and weighed 122 pounds. He was discharged on 26 July 1945 with the rank of SSGT, AAF.
During his time in the military, he was hospitalized (March 1944) and treated for acute appendicitis (gangrenous and perforated).
