Tillman South was born in 1833 to Elijah South and Rhoda Anders South in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Jerusha Ann Elizabeth Stewart was born on November 28, 1838 to John and Anna Stewart in Fayette County, Alabama. Tillman and Jerusha were married about 1855 in Fayette and had five children. Tillman died on November 30, 1881 according to his will records and Jerusha died in 1887. Both are buried in the Stewart Cemetery in Fayette County in unmarked graves.
Tillman served in the Civil War from 1861 through 1865 rising from Private to the rank of Sergeant in the Confederate 41st Alabama Infantry.
